Humunga Kowabunga

Disney's Typhoon Lagoon

  • Type: Thrill Ride
Height: 48 inches (122cm) or taller
Experience: Thrill Rides

Humunga Kowabunga offers 3 high-speed waterslides designed for big kids, teens and adults who are at least 48 inches tall at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. Are you brave enough to take a plunge down a near-vertical, 5-story waterslide? How about in the dark? Seize your courage and shoot almost straight down Mount Mayday in any of 3 side-by-side, 214-foot long enclosed speed slides. You won't see where you're going as you zip downhill in the dark, drop 5 stories in seconds then splash down to a surprise ending.

The three side-by-side Humunga Kowabunga speed slides deserve acclaim among thrill lovers, as they drop more than 50 feet in a distance barely four times that amount. For nonmathematicians, that's very steep. Oh yes, and then you go through a cave. In the dark. The average speed is 30 mph; however, you can really fly if you lie flat on your back, cross your ankles, wrap your arms around your chest, and arch your back. One caveat: the ride only lasts a few seconds and lines are often too long to re-queue for another plunge.

Touring Tips

  • Humunga Kowabunga is located near the Storm Slides attraction. Climb the right slope of Mount Mayday to get to these attractions.
  • On crowded days it's best to visit this attraction early in the morning.
  • Ladies may wish to opt for a one-piece bathing suit for this ride.
  • There is a small section of bleacher seating here for the less daring companions of those who like to drop 50 feet nearly straight down at 30 mph.
  • If you are not sure whether you want to brave Humunga Kowabunga, you can always climb to the top, check it out and walk back down if you change your mind.
  • Race against your friends or family; there are three slides at the top.
  • Any time of year that the park is open is a good time to visit, but it does get very hot and very crowded during the summer peak season. There are two better times to arrive, shortly before the park opens, and in the warmer months when the park is open at night, its best to get there mid to late afternoon. If you want to go for the morning/early afternoon, it is essential to arrive by park opening time, particularly in the warmer months.
  • Weekdays, the nearer to the beginning of the week the better. Later in the week, Typhoon Lagoon attracts the people who typically spend the beginning of the week at the major parks. Local residents tend to keep things busy on the weekends.

Facts

  • Three enclosed "speed slide" flumes that send riders downward five stories in seconds reaching speeds of 39 mph.
  • Travel down one of the triple enclosed slides and through caves on this 214-foot ride.
  • Highly trained and qualified lifeguards are on duty over the course of the day patrolling the Water Park. All Disney lifeguards must complete a thorough training program that exceeds most national standards.
